Slow Cooker Beef Neck Bones and Gravy

Slow Cooker Beef Neck Bones and Gravy

Beef neck bones are a Southern staple recipe. I couldn’t find a recipe online, so I created this one on my own by pulling from some of my favorite oxtail, roast, and pork neck bone recipes. Turned out yummy so I thought I’d share. Serve over steamed rice and peas or mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds beef neck bones, or more to taste
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour, divided
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 onion, sliced into long pieces

Directions

Step 1
Preheat slow cooker to High.

Step 2
Clean neck bones and remove any excess fat. Season bones with cumin, allspice, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and salt; dust with 1/4 cup flour.

Step 3
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat; cook and stir garlic until fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes. Increase heat to medium-high and add seasoned neck bones; cook until bones begin to brown, about 1 minute per side.

Step 4
Transfer neck bones and drippings to the preheated slow cooker; add beef broth and onion.

Step 5
Cook on High for 1 hour. Reduce heat to Low and cook 4 to 6 hours.

Step 6
Transfer neck bones to a dish. Sprinkle remaining flour into the slow cooker and stir well. Return neck bones to slow cooker. Let stand until gravy thickens, 15 to 20 minutes.

Cook’s Notes:

For thicker gravy, increase the amount of flour added to the neck bone drippings. Pork neck bones can be used in place of beef neck bones.

I followed the recipe to the almost letter on the ingredients, only thing I had a small Chuck steak so I added it to the crock pot with the neck bones and I didn’t have allspice so I used 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg. Turned out great, my husband has asked me to make it again as soon as possible. I served it over mashed potatoes, leftovers i served over rice, both delious.

These neck ones were amazing! Very tender and flavorful. Followed the recipe but did not make the gravy as the broth and onion made a nice topping in itself. Served with yellow rice and black beans. Yummy!!!!

My neck bones turned out good and I didn’t use the slow cooker I arranged over the stove and it didn’t take as long I fried the neck bones in a little canola oil in which I lightly coated with the all purpose flour over the medium heat as suggested when neck bones were done I sat them aside and started to use the drippings that was left over along with the extra flour from the meat to form the gravy while preparing a second pot to boil the neck bones in the chicken broth instead of using beef broth I also used the chicken broth to make the gravy from the left over drippings in the pan also sliced up onions and used minced garlic as well seasoning the neck bones with Grace’s All purpose seasoning along with garlic and onion powder and a little sazon to give it a little coloring to it as it boiled down to the desired amount of broth that’s when I poured the gravy onion’s and minced garlic into the pot along with a can of sliced white potatoes with yellow rice on the side yummy ?? definitely worth it and will be making again thanks for the recipe!??
