What Is a Sloppy Joe?
A Sloppy Joe is a sandwich consisting of ground beef and onions in a tomato-based sauce served on a hamburger bun.
The sandwich likely originated in Sioux City, Iowa in the 1930s. According to legend, the "loose meat sandwich" was the creation of a cook named Joe.
How to Make Sloppy Joes
You'll find the full, step-by-step recipe below — but here's a brief overview of what you can expect when you make these classic Sloppy Joes:
1. Cook the beef, onion, and green pepper.2. Drain the liquids, then stir in the remaining ingredients.3. Simmer for about 30 minutes. Serve on hamburger buns.
Nicole’s Top Sloppy Joe Tips
“There’s no need to pull out any of that canned stuff,” according to Nicole McLaughlin (a.k.a. NicoleMcMom), who says you’ve already got everything you need to make a perfect Sloppy Joe sitting in your pantry. Here are a few of her favorite Sloppy Joe tips and tricks:
· Nicole doesn't like to drain the meat after she cooks it (she likes to use the rendered fat to saute the onions and bell peppers), so she prefers using a lean meat.· "When it comes to the bun," Nicole says, "the cheaper the better." For the classic Sloppy Joe experience, you want it to absorb all the excess liquid.· Make sure to overfill the bun so that some meat spills out. Why? So you can scoop it up with potato chips, of course!
What to Serve With Sloppy Joes
Recipe creator Tamara suggests serving these Sloppy Joe sandwiches with homemade sweet potato fries. They also pair well with all kinds of diner-style side dishes! For instance:
· Homemade Crispy Seasoned French Fries· Homemade Mac and Cheese· Refrigerator Dill Pickles· Restaurant-Style House Salad· Boston Baked Beans

Can You Make Sloppy Joes Ahead of Time?
Yes, you can make Sloppy Joes ahead of time. Simply follow the recipe instructions, let cool, and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Reheat thoroughly on the stove or in the microwave and serve on fresh hamburger buns.
Cookdap Community Tips and Praise
“I wanted a Sloppy Joe recipe that was quick and easy, a little sweet, but not unbearably sweet,” says momof2ingeorgia. “This was AWESOME! I make it once every 2 weeks. Quick and easy, especially on a day when we have soccer practices!”
“Great balance of flavors and as easy as opening a canned mix,” according to WithaC. “I’ve made it exactly as described and also in the Crock-Pot (brown and drain the beef first). This is now a family favorite.”
“Terrific recipe,” raves steve22. “Ended up using ground venison instead of beef. Couldn’t tell the difference. Will definitely make again. Quick and easy.”
Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- ¼ cup chopped onion
- ¼ cup chopped green bell pepper
- ¾ cup ketchup, or to taste
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar, or to taste
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard, or to taste
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- salt and ground black pepper to taste
- 6 hamburger buns, split
Directions
Step 1
Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir lean ground beef in the hot skillet until some of the fat starts to render, 3 to 4 minutes. Add onion and bell pepper; continue to cook until vegetables have softened and beef is cooked through, 3 to 5 more minutes.
Step 2
Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, and garlic powder; season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes.
Step 3
Divide meat mixture evenly among hamburger buns.
Tips
If using ground beef with a higher fat content than lean, be sure to drain it before starting Step 2.

I was a bit disappointed by this recipe. It just tasted like ground beef simmered with ketchup and mustard, which basically, is all it is. I’ve been wanting to introduce my 4yearold son to Sloppy Joes, since he loves tacos so much. This was not the recipe I was hoping for; he didn’t like it at all. Guess I’ll try Manwich or one of those McCormick packets …

All the raves about this recipe were true. I made it the day before I needed it for
an informal family birthday celebration. I doubled the recipe thinking I could freeze
half for later use . . . foolish me–it was so popular we ate it all! The best thing about
it is it’s simplicity and can be made lower fat by draining meat throroughly after
browning. I highly recommend it (and so do the six other members of the family
who ate it.) -

I’ve made homemade sloppy joes from different recipes before, and so far this one is the easiest, and it tastes just as good as the much more involved versions! My only adjustment would be to double the recipe if you truly want to feed 6, unless you intend to give each person 1 helping on a small hamburger bun.

This is a great sloppy joe recipe! My kids picked out the onion and bell pepper but ate every last bite of the meat. My husband and I loved this and I will be adding it to our dinner rotation. I did take the advice of a previous reviewer and add worcestershire sauce. I made hamburger buns with the Amish White Bread recipe and topped the meal off with fruit and a salad. Next time I am going to try it with ground turkey instead of the beef for a lower fat meal. Wonderful!

When I asked my boyfriend if it tasted like sloppy joes, he thought I had added something to the can, but I said these were homemade!!! He was extremely impressed. Who would have thought that you could make sloppy joes (sans preservatives) from stuff everyone has at home! I followed the suggestion by Cheryl, left on 5/2/02, and it worked out GREAT. THANKS!!!!

I had never made Sloppy Joes before but my Mum used to make them when I was a kid and I loved them. I’m not a pepper fan so left this out and my whole family loved it. We had them for tea last night. I will definately add this to my list of family favourite meals. Thank you!

I give these the highest rating because it tasted great, it was easy to make, and it consists of everything you’d have on hand. Sloppy Joes shouldn’t be a gourmet affair, it should be a quick-to-make weeknight meal that tastes good. These are the only ones I will be making from now on.

This was awesome, my husband and I don’t like the cinnamon in the packaged stuff, so this was great! I screwed up and used mustard powder, so then I added a squirt of prepared mustard and some regular barbecue sauce and it was AMAZING! My husband thought it was ok, but he hates anything sloppy. I will make this again.
I also added mushrooms. Can’t wait to eat the leftovers.

better than from a mix. my husband loved this more than i did. however it was not as “sloppy” as he had hoped, and we both thought it could use more sauce. i used 1.3 pounds of ground chicken instead of 1 pound of ground beef. however, i don’t think that can account for why it was dry. i would probably double the ketchup, mustard and spices for that amount of meat.

I love this recipe and will use it to feed about 45 people at our Post. I will change two things: First, I am diabetic and the 3 Tbs. of Brown sugar is a bit much. I have made this recipe 3 times and seem to like only one TBS in my sauce. Second, I need a little bit more sauce. The sauce is so easy and inexpensive. I am placing this recipe in “My Favorite Cookbook”, which is personalized to my liking. Thanks again.

This was a great recipe! I did not add the green peppers or onions because I do not enjoy that in my sloppy joes, but it worked out great for me without them. Very tasty and very easy to make when you have had a long day and don’t feel like cooking much but want a decent meal!
