Homemade stroganoff doesn't have to be hard! This simple ground beef stroganoff comes together in 20 minutes with just six ingredients.

What Is Beef Stroganoff?

Beef stroganoff is an iconic Russian dish that consists of beef in a creamy sauce. According to legend, it was created by chefs who worked for the Stroganov family in the 1800s. The dish is often made with mushrooms and served over rice or egg noodles.

What Makes This Recipe So ‘Simple?’

Traditional beef stroganoff is made with steak, a roux-based sauce, and sauteed mushrooms. But, as the title suggests, this recipe is simplified. It relies on shortcut ingredients, such as ground beef and canned cream of mushroom soup, to keep the cook time down and to cut down on extra steps.

How to Make Beef Stroganoff

You'll find the full, step-by-step recipe below — but here's a brief overview of what can you can expect when you make this ground beef stroganoff:

Saute ground beef until brown, then drain the fat. Add the canned soup and garlic powder. Simmer for about 10 minutes, then remove from heat. Stir cooked egg noodles and sour cream into the meat mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

What to Serve With Beef Stroganoff

Since this ground beef stroganoff is a rather heavy dish, you may not need a side dish at all. A simple side salad, though, is a great way to round out your meal and to add a pop of color.

Of course, if you want something a little different, you could leave out the egg noodles and serve the ground beef and sauce mixture over white rice or mashed potatoes.

How to Store Beef Stroganoff

Store leftover beef stroganoff in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stove.

Can You Freeze Beef Stroganoff?

Unfortunately, cooked egg noodles don't freeze well. If you'd like to freeze this ground beef stroganoff recipe, it's best to prepare it without the noodles. Freeze the beef-sauce mixture in a freezer-safe container for up to three months. Thaw on the stove and stir in cooked egg noodles before serving.

Cookdap Community Tips and Praise

"My family loved this," says Amy Stewart. "I took a previous reviewer's suggestion and added a packet of Hidden Valley Ranch dressing mix, I think this is what made it so delicious! I also threw in a small can of mushrooms. Thanks for the recipe!"

"This recipe was quick and easy," raves one Cookdap community member. "It's a joy to be able to have a nice dinner on the table in about 30 minutes. This is one recipe that I will certainly use again and again."

“This was really good,” says Stephanie LeBlanc. “I did make a few changes. I doubled the meat on this recipe and then used some beef broth with flour to cut down on the thickness. I also added a can of cream of onion soup to give it additional flavor.”

Ingredients

  • 1 (8 ounce) package egg noodles
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can fat-free condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder, or to taste

Directions

Step 1
Gather all ingredients.

Step 2
Saut? ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat until browned and crumbly; 5 to 10 minutes.

Step 3
Meanwhile, fill a large pot with lightly salted water and bring to a rapid boil. Cook egg noodles at a boil until tender yet firm to the bite, 7 to 9 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Step 4
Drain and discard any fat from the cooked beef. Stir condensed soup and garlic powder into the beef. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 5
Remove beef from the heat. Add egg noodles and stir to combine. Stir in sour cream and season with salt and pepper.

Step 6
Serve hot and enjoy!

This recipe was good. I used Kluski noodles instead of egg noodles and added some more garlic powder and added canned mushrooms. This was a versatile dish and very quick and easy to make.

Thanks for this very easy recipe! I didnt make any changes, it is perfect the way it is. My husband and I loved it although my 7 and 5 year olds would’nt eat it.

This recipe couldn’t be easier. My husband & I and all my kids (ages 13,11 and even my fussy 4 yr.old) LOVED it and everyone cleaned their plates. Everyone wants me to make this recipe again!

My family enjoyed this recipe so much. My 9 year old helped me make it and was so proud of himself for ‘making dinner’. 🙂 The only thing I thought was a tiny bit too much was the sour cream, so I used 3/4 of the container and it was perfect. This took only about 20 mins total and is a godsend after a long day. Thanks!

This was the exact recipe I was looking for tonight, I added a can of mushrooms and extra spices plus a little milk (I used 1 1/2 lbs of burger)I only had macaroni noodles and it worked just fine. My kids (ages 3 and 6) are eating it as I type this. It is very good! I will make it again, it was super fast! Thank you!

This is a very easy recipe, even my husband can make it! I added about half a onion to the ground beef and some sauted mushrooms….turned out great!

This was really good, but a little too thick and rich for my taste. I think that I would add just a little milk to thin it out a bit. Also, I ended up with what I thought was way too many egg noodles/too little sauce. I might try using less ground beef next time, as well. Great tasting, quick meal, all in all!

This is a good quick dinner. I have a better recipe for stroganoff, but some nights I don’t have time to mess with it and this is much faster. I added extra mushrooms, garlic rather than garlic powder, milk to thin it out and a little ketchup to give it color. My one year old loves this.

Good but needs something. It definitely needed milk to thin it out some. My 5 yr old and 2 yr old both ate it so I’ll probably make it again just for them.

A really simple and quick recipe. However, I thought it needed something extra for flavor, so I added a 1/4 can of beef broth to it and it thinned it up a bit and added some great flavor to it. I also added a small can of mushrooms. I will fix it again.

Yes simple, but very unsatisfying if prepared as is. I agree with the others about adding ingredients. Onions, mushrooms, fresh garlic rather than powder, and seasoning in the form of broth or soy sauce all work well.

Very good recipe for the quick preparation time. Two recommendations for this recipe though: Use “real” garlic instead of the garlic powder, and add mushrooms to the recipe.

I made this last night, but I didn’t have this recipe, I threw it together. The changes I made were adding 1/2 onion, one can of mushrooms, and about a 1/2 cup of milk. I whisked the milk, sour cream and soup together and then added it to the ground beef. I would have used fresh garlic but did not have any on hand. I also added a couple of dashes of Worchestshire and Hot sauce. My husband like it, and it made a lot. I think it needs a little more flavor – beef broth might help.

This was a very easy recipe, but it just didn’t have the flavor I was looking for. It was to bland for our “spicy” family.

This just wasn’t really very good. I’m not sure what it needed but it wasn’t very tasty and it was very thick.

We didn’t care for this. I used it as a base to make again and used sirloin instead ground beef, which generates some nice juice while cooking. I added 1 onion, cut down on the garlic, added more spices, 3 tablespoons ketchup, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire, and last added 1 cup of sour cream and heated through not letting it boil. Was soooo much better! I know the ketchup part sounds weird but just give it a try.

Yum. I actually added a little more sour cream, a little milk, and threw in a package of onion soup mix, and served it on rotini noodles, since that’s what I had on hand. I’m single, and got three yummy meals out of it!

So easy. I made minor adjustments: used about 1/2 lb ground beef and browned with 1/2 onion and 1 clove garlic, added milk and 1 beef buillon cube to soup mixture, and a little more sour cream. Yummy! Even the hubby said it was good and he hates this type of food. I also used elbow macaroni which worked fine.

Not enough taste for me. I’ve yet to find a stroganoff recipie that I prefer over the boxed one.

This recipe overall waws pretty good though it was rather bland. I tried spicing it up with previous recomendations of hot sauce and worchestershire sauce. I thought that this gave it a strange flavor. It needed something, but I am not sure what. I also added milk to thin down the sauce. I have had better beef stroganoff recipes.

I dont eat ground beef, but i love stroganoff, so i substituted Yves veggie ground round for the beef. The onions in the ground round gave it a nice flavour. As well, i added a can of mushrooms, used fresh garlic, and to thin it a little, i poured in the liquid from the can of mushrooms. Even my carnivourous boyfriend loved it. I’ll make it again for sure 🙂

Well this is a quick and easy meal. I didn’t use fat free cream of mushroom soup, because I had regular cream of mushroom soup and it tasted good like I made it. I also added alittle more garlic powder (love garlic) and you could just taste alittle hint of something different. Thanks for the recipe…

This was easy, but very, very bland! This is a basic recipe that really needs to be adjusted. It definitely lack some spices and/or seasonings, like cumin, chili powder, nutmeg… according to your taste. If I make it again, I will season it according to my liking.

Very good for a quick and easy weeknight meal. I used 1 cup of sour cream and 1 can of beef broth. I also browned the meat with chopped onions and garlic. I serve the noodles and stroganoff separately as some family members like more noodles than meat and vice versa. Thanks.

Very easy, but not that great. A little too thick with creams and meat. Lessen the amount of meat and add some milk and it’s OK for an easy, quick after-work meal.

This was a great base recipe. Thanks Brenda! I did however add a few things. I cooked 1 onion and some freshly minced garlic with the beef. I also added some worchestershire sauce, 1 tsp oregano, 1/4 cup beef broth, and some mushrooms to the mix. I did not stir the sauce and noodles together. That way I can use the leftover sauce on rice or potatoes, to change it up a bit. It was absolutely tasty … very good! I will definately be making this recipe again.

My 3 and 1 year olds loved this and I thought it was pretty good for as simple as it was to make! I did tweek it a bit – I added mushrooms, used real garlic instead of powder and of course salt & peppered it. But other than that, while not a fancy recipe, it is quite tasty for being so easy! A perfect weeknight supper! I’ll definitely make it again!

This overall was a very good dish, much like one out of a box. I did need to add some milk at the end to make it a little more moist; otherwise it would have been too dry. I also added a little more garlic powder and salt for some more flavor. But definitely an easy dish to make!

Even the late teenager who heated it up in the microwave thought it rocked!!(his words not mine) I did add 2 cups beef boullion as suggested in other reviews because it seemed like it would be too thick and creamy without it. Also added diced onion when browning the hamburger. Amazing flavor from simple preperation!! Just the way I like my recipes to be.

Love this cuz it’s soo quick and easy I’ve made at least once a week. I’ve added worsteshire sauce, onion, garlic and mushrooms. I’ve also tried the golden mushroom soup with a little milk and that is good too. My husband doesn’t like the sour cream so I leave that out, but with all the other cream in it you can hardly tell.

I thought this recipe was not bad as a base recipe. By no means would I just make it as is since it would be way too bland and too thick. However, I decided to spruce it up by adding a cup of red wine, a cup of rice milk, rice sour cream (I’m lactose intolerant), a teaspoon of paprika, and some dried parsley to the sauce. When I was browning the meat, I added some fresh garlic and onions. Also, I hate mushrooms, so I used cream of onion soup. This was my first time making a beef stroganoff and I thought it went pretty well. I will make this again with the adjustments I mentioned.

This is a good recipe for a fast dinner. I omit the sour cream because it makes the sauce a little too thick for me. Instead, I add enough milk to compliment the cream of mushroom soup. I also like to add a few fresh cut mushrooms if I have any on hand. This makes great leftovers!

It was good, but it was a very heavy meal. I added paprika and a few shakes of lea & perrins as suggested. I also used half garlic powder and half crushed garlic, and a package of fresh mushrooms that i sliced up and cooked with the beef while it browned. And, after reading all the other reviews comolaining that the sauce was thick, I put in only half the amount of [reduced fat] sour cream. Even using reduced fat sour cream and soup, it still is a very heavy meal. It did have a very good flavor though. If we could rate in halves, I’d give it 3 and a half stars, but given that I think a lot of people give overly generous ratings site-wide, I’m rounding down.

This is just Hamburger Helper, only you dirty more pots. Also I had to add about a cup and a half of milk. It’s too thick otherwise.

My mom raised me on this stuff! Then taught me how to make it – simple, quick, tasty and sticks to your ribs. It turns out well with cut-up stew beef too. But you do have to put some milk in there – half the soup can worth. Plus you need some onions, and I go with real garlic.

I have been making this for some time now and I too usually add water or milk. It lasts a little longer this way too. I also make mashed potatoes and canned corn. It doesn’t make it easier but it sure makes it tastier.

    If you can imagine that

My kids dance when I tell them this is for Diner.

I was looking for something quick and warm and this hit the spot. I cooked the beef with some onion and minced garlic and it was delicous! Even my 5 year old ate it! I also added 3/4 can of milk to the dish, it was a little too thick for us. Thank you so much for posting this recipe, we’ll be making it again!

This recipe is just like my mom used to make, but I lowered the sour cream. I used to hate it when she put in too much sour cream. It’s a great basic recipe, and my hubby has asked for it again.

GREAT! Just had this for dinner. Everyone loved it. I omitted the sour cream and filled the soup can halfway with milk. I added just a small amount of mozzarella cheese. I also took the advice of another rating and added a little bit of ketchup and parsley. I added frozen carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower. My kids and husband LOVED it!!

This is a great starter recipe. I changed it up a bit, I added fresh garlic , onion, mushrooms, and garlic salt to the ground beef while frying it. Then I added 1 can of beef broth, 1 can of cream of mushroom and one beef boulion cube. I served it over egg noodles with warm rolls and it was delicious.

this was nice and simple. i browned 1 chopped onion and a clove of garlic with the beef. i also added white and red pepper. i think it needs something else, as it seems to be missing something. maybe worstichere (?) sauce? i will definately try it again and keep experimenting with the flavors. very good base to experiment with!!

I thought this was a GREAT recipe! I took the advice of one of the other reviewers and added garlic, onion, and mushrooms while cooking the ground beef (I also added beef stock) and it was fantastic. I’m only giving it 4 stars though because although I LOVED it, my husband didn’t rave about it. **I’ll still make it again though…he’ll learn to love it. :-)**

As others say, a great starter recipe. It is thick, but I like it that way. Someone suggested bacon, which turned out to be a FANTASTIC choice. I added onion, garlic, mushrooms, and milk. Next time I’ll try beef broth.

I really enjoyed this. I liked it because it was so simple. The only thing I did different was I sauteed garlic with the beef (would have done onions and mushrooms, but my husband doesn’t like them… such a baby!). If you are looking for something that tastes a lot like Stroganoff, don’t go for this one. This was just a quick dinner that had a similar flavor.

I’m not much of a cook, so whenever I look for new recipes it has to be very simple! This recipe was just that! I found it to be pretty good too and the kids (all but one) ate seconds! (A rarity when your mom can’t cook!!!) So I’m giving this four stars…thanks a bunch!!

I thought this was delicious, though my boyfriend didn’t like it. I made a lot of changes and additions, due to the variety and lack of ingredients in my kitchen. I cooked the beef with a clove of minced garlic and an onion. After draining it I added cream of celery soup because I had no mushroom (I guess this change keeps it from being stroganaff haha). I also added more onion and some worcestshire and broccoli florets. I served it with garlic bread and I loved it.

Good base for a stroganoff, but definitely not enough flavor… needs the onion, garlic, etc. suggested by other reviewers. Use this recipe to start, but you have to play with it a little. We didn’t have enough milk on hand to thin it out and it was way too thick.

This is one of our favorites, delicious and very easy! It can be very bland, you have to add more of each ingredient. I usually add about a cup of sour cream, sometimes more depending on the flavor. It is very important to flavor the beef while it is browning. Otherwise the beef is very bland.

Mom rates it a 4. Kids & hubbie loved it! I thought it was bland and I had to add about 1/2 cup of milk to thin & make the sauce go further. Lots more garlic (fresh & granulated) & pepper. Easy, simple dinner that the rest of the family loved.

This recipe was really quick and easy to make, but tasted great…after reading other’s suggestions, and catering to my family’s taste, these are the modifications I made:
    – chop up and onion and throw it in with the beef while it’s cooking (next time I will use two for more onion)
    – after draining beef, double the mushroom soup, add two cans of slice mushrooms, and add one soup can of milk
    – i added about a cup of sour cream, don’t worry if people don’t like it, my sister hates it, and mixed in with the other ingredients, it tasted great
The extra soup and milk really made a nice sauce so when I served it over egg noodles, everything was coated perfectly. Thanks for an awesome recipe!

Pretty good. I did add more garlic and used milk to thin down the soup. I also used a cup of sourcream. Husband and kids really liked it. Would be really good with mushrooms but my family doesnt like them (to bad). Easy and good.

It’s good for what it is. I added green bell peppers, onion, mushrooms and Worcestershire sauce. I think it would’ve been pretty plain otherwise.

I’ve never made beef stroganoff before and found this to be a very easy recipe. I followed it exactly, although I did add some worcestershire to it in an attempt to spice it up. My husband and I both enjoyed it although I felt as though something was missing.

Me and my family enjoyed this very much. I did read alot of the reviews before deciding on this one. I did listen to one that said to add a extra can of soup and mushroom. I also did add a can of milk to make more gravy. I think I would rather serve it over rice though. Overall it was very delicious.

My husband made this for dinner last night. The only thing we did differently was use ground turkey in place of ground beef. Overall, I thought the dish was good but we both agreed it had too much garlic. My husband thought he had read the recipe wrong and had to get up and check while we were in the middle of eating. Next time we would use a tsp. of garlic powder. It is a good base recipe to start with and add ingredients to your liking. Would recommend.

I made this with the addition of sauteing a whole package of fresh, chopped mushrooms and a whole, coarsely chopped yellow onion with the ground beef before adding the “wet” ingredients. Thanks for this simple, quick recipe!

We enjoy this Stroganoff quite often. The only thing I change is to add more mushrooms, either canned or fresh (what ever I may have) it is a great quick meal that my whole family loves
