Chef John's Best Hot Dog Recipes

Chef John builds a better bacon dog by using a couple of small hot dogs instead of one big one. Chef John explains, "We will merge them together using the latest bacon-binding technology. Other than some potato chips, I think potato salad is the ultimate hot dog side dish, so go ahead and serve this up with some."

"Made with strips of boneless chicken breasts that are baked with a secret sauce and coated with barbecue to finish, these chicken dogs are tender and juicy," says Chef John. "If you're looking for a different alternative to put on your hot dog bun, try these bacon-wrapped chicken dogs. Plus, you can feel good knowing exactly what ingredients went into your hot dog!"

"This 'burger dog' is far more than a hot dog-shaped cheeseburger," says Chef John. "It's a one-handed wonder that's perfectly proportioned and easier to eat than a regular cheeseburger."

"This meaty mash-up came about thanks to some lamb kebab experiments," says Chef John. "I wondered what would happen if I did a skewer-less kebab using the same ingredients that would typically go into a hotdog. The firm texture of the kebab reminded me of a hot dog's 'snap.' The taste is actually closer to a bratwurst."

Chef John upgrades franks-and-beans in a big way by combining saucy homemade beans with high-quality beef hot dogs and fresh veggies. "Usually, franks and beans is made by opening up a couple cans of baked beans, and heating it up with some sliced hotdogs," says Chef John. "Not exactly something you'd serve to visiting dignitaries. This recipe achieves something much healthier, equally delicious, and every bit as comforting. Serve with buttered toast and Champagne."

What's more fun than a hot dog? A corn dog, of course. But even more fun than that is a fun-size corn dog. "Not only are these corn dogs easy and fun, but because we're doing them in the oven and not deep frying them, they are way, way less messy to make," says Chef John. "Serve with mustard and ketchup."

The only thing your delicious dogs are missing now is the perfect delivery system — Chef John's butter-crisped, split-top hot dog buns. He explains the genius design of these homemade buns: "The meat and fixings go in the top, which leaves three relatively flat sides to toast in butter."
