Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • ½ cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
  • 1 cup milk, or as needed

Directions

Step 1
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

Step 2
Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Cut in shortening with a knife or pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir Cheddar cheese and chives into flour mixture; gradually stir in milk to form a soft dough.

Step 3
Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and with floured hands, knead until smooth, about 15 times. Roll dough out to a 1-inch thickness with a floured rolling pin. Cut biscuits with a 2 1/2-inch round cookie cutter; place onto an ungreased baking sheet. Press dough trimmings together, roll out again, and cut remaining dough into rounds.

Step 4
Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 15 minutes.

Loved these… I got 10 biscuits. Popped the bag in the freezer for dinners. Defrosted one tonight.. just as yummy. Make the entire batch when you make them… they froze well

I made half the recipe and these were delicious! I will make again.

This recipe is spot on! Just like my mom (from Nova Scotia) makes! I made this recipe twice, using lard as in the instructions, and the second time with butter as a replacement for the lard. You can lower the lard/butter amount to 1/4 cup if you want to save a few calories. You can also be a bit more generous with the shredded cheese, if you like.

I consider myself a fussie biscuit taster! These were the best ever! My husband loved them also….and that is something. I will be making these often. Will certainly be on the menu when having chowder.

My husband had a fancy for cheese biscuits and made these tonight. He made them smaller to go with dinner and I must say I was very impressed. Very scrumptious! I popped the remaining biscuits in the freezer. He can make these anytime he likes. Thank you hubby.. Very nice!!

I made these for my boyfriend and now he asks me to make them all the time. Great recipe and a nice addition to any meal.

If you want something quick and extremely easy on a cold morning, this is the ticket. Very quick to make with no baking experience required. Appearance, taste and texture were very good. One suggestion, do not attempt this recipe unless you are willing to make them often! Everyone from my wife to my 6 year old daughter loved them.
    Thank You Allie K 🙂

So simple and good! I wanted to use chives but didn’t have any so I used about 1/2 teas onion powder with the flour. I chose to use butter. It was just me and my immediate family so I dropped them straight from the bowl on a cookie sheet and baked as directed. They came out so tender and toasty on the bottoms. Thank you!

I loved this recipe I have never had a biscuit that worked out. These where perfect, I did put them in the fridge while the oven was preheating just to get cold again. I have found my go to for sure. Excellent

So delicious! Instead of chives (I ran out), I used Club House La Grille Maple Bacon spice, it made them a tad more Canadian too mmmm! Thanks for the recipe!

My kids and my husband are raving about these! My husband is super excited to start making sandwiches and dips for them. 🙂 thank you for such an awesome recipe! It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to get such a reaction out of all of them

It was very good and easy and went well with a nice cup of tea. Next time though, I think I’ll add more cheese. But that’s just because I love cheese

Used: 1/2 cup butter, 1 1/2 cup shredded cheese. Added: 1 tsp b.powder. Turns out a bit salty, but hubby likes it that way

No changes, made exactly as written. Amazingly wonderful texture. My family loved them! Thank you

I have made these several times and everyone loves them. I have left out the chives each time. (Just don’t have them around much.) They make up in almost no time at all. Can’t see why anyone would bother with store bought or mixes when this is so simple.

Fantastic! My kids loved them! I will for sure be making these again.

Easy and delicious!! I used butter instead of shortening, twice the cheese, (Italian blend) bacon bits and Italian seasoning instead of chives.

they were delicious will definitely make again

Added a little more cheese (3/4 cup), and used butter instead of shortening (about a quarter cup). It made a dozen biscuits, which husband and 4 little ones completely devoured in about 5 minutes!

easy and quick, makes a very nice tea biscuit. perfect for a weekend morning with a tea or coffee.

I had to multiply the recipe, and ended up not feeding the milk. The end product was a bit crumbly but it tasted good.
I will make the recipe again using the original measures, to see how it tastes!!

Quick and delicious breakfast! I did two batches one cheese and one blueberry it came out really good.the only thing I would add is maybe a few spoons of sugar if you’re making blueberry biscuits

Excellent recipe. I made the recipe for 10 servings, reduced the salt by half and increased the cheese to 1 cup.
