This was my mother’s blackberry cobbler recipe from the 1940s. I entered it in the Jefferson County Fair on August 28th for the first time, and it won First Place, Champion, and Best in Show.
Ingredients
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ cup milk
- ¼ cup melted margarine
- 2 cups fresh blackberries
- 1 cup water
Directions
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9-inch square baking dish.
Step 2
Whisk 1/2 cup sugar, flour, and baking powder together in a mixing bowl. Stir in milk and melted margarine until a batter forms. Scrape into the prepared baking dish. Scatter blackberries over top, then sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup sugar. Pour in water.
Step 3
Bake in the preheated oven until batter rises and top is brown, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Cool for 1 hour before serving.
